The great gender debate

One of the most common questions I’m asked is what (if anything) is the difference between men’s and women’s skin. The answer is that men generally have slightly thicker, oilier skin, with thicker hair follicles – hence shaving. In fact, it’s this last fact that highlights how men’s skin can sometimes be more sensitive than women’s. Daily shaving can damage the skin’s natural barrier and expose it to harsh environmental factors such as the sun and wind. The results can be redness, bumps and stinging. The good news is that by using mild products when washing and shaving, these problems can be lessened or avoided all together. In addition, a good moisturiser (one with an SPF works extra hard) will help replace the skin’s barrier after shaving. Other factors such as smoking, late nights and alcohol all play their part in drying out the skin’s upper layers too, but that’s down to the individual - we don’t have a cream to counter that yet!
