What's best: Shave gels, foams, creams oils...?
If you've read my secrets to a good shave you will know that I believe there are four key products in the men's shaving cabinet. An exfoliator to be used occasionally, a shaving aid, a sharp razor and a light moisturiser to finish. When it comes to shaving aids there seams to be a limitless choice. Gels that foam, gels that don''t, cream, oils.
The primary purpose of them all is to help soften the beard and lubricate the blade as it slides across the face. The traditional soap based shave bowl used with a shaving brush is still popular partly because of the 'experience' that comes with it. The working up of the lather into the beard takes time and is part of enjoyment. The more modern shave foams and foaming gels are simpler to use and include the extras that improve rinseabilty, slip and moisturisation. Shave oils and non-foaming shave gels are gaining popularity, it's easier to see where you are shaving, particularly good if you want a clean edge to your goatee, shape your side burns or need to be careful around problem areas.

Shave soaps often have to defend themselves against the charge that they are too drying (too good at cleansing and removing oils from the skin), but this buts them all in the same camp. Good.. (0) Comments

Shave Foams and Shave Gels (the aerosol ones that foam up in you hand) are soap based to soften the beard and to produce a lather that will lubricate the blade that as you shave. Extra ingredients.. (0) Comments

Shave oils are not water soluble and you can find they are not so good at wetting the beard and softening it. Make sure you a good facial wash in hot water first to assist with softening the beard.. (2) Comments
