Firming
What gives skin its firmness? This is the theme for this month. Skin is a fascinating organ and I always liken it to a living mattress! The fancy patterned surface of the mattress is like the outermost layer of the skin - the stratum corneum (the place where cells die and drop off the surface). This is the part visible to the outside world but its appearance is influenced by what goes on beneath. Then there is the soft cloth underneath the patterned surface to stop it ripping within the first few years - this is like the epidermis, where new cells are being produced on a daily basis to replace the lost surface stratum corneum cells. So these two outer parts keep the surface clean and looking good. The top layers are sewn into the deeper parts where there are the large springs - which is like the collagen in the skin - and the finer wires or springs that hold the big springs together - this is elastin. Then there is the stuffing that fills in all the gaps - in the skin this is a gel-like mixture of many things including a material that some of you may know, hyaluronic acid.
