Mothers and babies need to keep their skin resilient
Posted on 13th April at 02:23 PM Posted by: Steve Barton
We know that as mum’s tums expand (or contract) they risk break-down with the resulting appearance of the dreaded stretch marks. We also know that as babies grow through the first few months their skin gradually becomes adapted to the outside world. The common factor here is resilience. The skin has evolved to protect the delicate inner organs from the potential damage from the outside world. One potential source of damage is the mechanical bumps and knock that we all take for granted in our daily life. To be able to cope with this the skin needs to be flexible; and moisturised skin is flexible skin. The outermost layers allow the skin to bind in moisture and the deeper layers too get constant nutrients from the blood circulating to ensure they too keep flexible. Massaging in body products keep mum’s tums flexible and baby’s skin protected - not ignoring the fact that rubbing in creams feels good for both parties too.

I belive sore and cracked nipples are due to difficulties with baby’s latch. How does the use of nipple products help solve this? What evidnce due you have of benefit to mothers of using these products? For example, increased healing, reduced pain during feeds, longer breastfeeding duration?

This is for anyone who is worried about “growing” stretch marks. I developed stretch marks around my thighs, breasts and sides during growth spurts when I was in primary and secondary school, these are completely normal and will fade in no time. Im 26 now and Ive never had anyone notice them yet, not even my boyfriend! If you are determined to try something Ive found Palmers Cocoa Butter is a wonderful moisturiser it also claims to reduce marks and scars and its really cheap too. In the mean time dont pay them a second thought, just concentrate on living life to the full and enjoying yourself.

Breast stretch marks

My 14 year old daughter has developed very large breast in quite a short space of time. She has very red, quite wide stretch marks, which she feels very embarrassed about. Is there anything on the market I can get to help them dissappear? Also as she has developed these stretch marks does it mean that her skin is more likely to develop further stretch marks (ie: if she ever becomes pregnant in the future) and if so should she start to get into the habit of using a cream on her stomach. If so what type of cream would be best? I look forward to hearing from you. With thanks
