The difference between dry scalp and dandruff

Posted on 30th April at 11:00 AM Posted by: Stewart Long

It can be difficult to distinguish between dry scalp conditions and dandruff as both problems result in visible flakes. Dandruff is usually associated with small white flakes in the hair but the scalp is generally not particularly itchy, red or inflamed. Dandruff is usually cleared very effectively by using an anti-dandruff product daily for two weeks.  If the scalp feels tight, itchy, irritated, inflamed or dry and a dandruff product has limited effect in treating the condition, it is likely that you suffer from a sensitive or dry scalp. In this case, a dry scalp regime may help considerably in alleviating the tightness and irritation. The products in the Expert range contain a moisturising, soothing pre-treatment (similar to an oil type product) to calm the scalp and protect it. There is also a mild shampoo and a highly moisturising conditioner with aloe, to further soothe and calm irritation. All the products are fragrance free and hypoallergenic and have been tested on sensitive skin individuals to minimize discomfort and help reduce the symptoms. These specialist dry scalp products also contain a stronger anti-flaking agent than the one found in most dandruff shampoos, to help control the large flakes that accompany the condition.

Dry itchy flaky scalp

Posted on 01st June at 10:03 AM Posted by: Shazza

I have been suffering with dry itchy scalp for sometime now and its embarrasing, especially when I have to resort to hitting my scalp to ease the itching.  I’ve tried many products and grease my scalp at least once a week (afro hair).  My hair is now breaking from the scalp on top of the scalp and the hair line is thinning. Your expert help would be greatly received.

Oily and flaky skin

I have very long hair but the problem is that it gets greasy really quickly. I can’t wash it everyday because it falls out. I have to wash it every two days at which point it gets really greasy and itchy. My scalp is neither dry nor is it flaky like. The dandruff comes out really greasy and in tiny ball like shapes. Its really annoying as its causing hair loss too and my hair is already thin in structure. I can’t use conditionner and many of the other brands make my hair worst. What would you suggest that I use? Please help as I would be going on holiday in a few weeks time and my hair will get worst while I’m there.

dry itchy scalp ? psoriasis

I have had a small area of dry scalp for 5 years which nothing has helped to relieve - corticosteroids, ketoconazole shampoos and much more. Every time I wash my hair the scalp dries out more and the itching then unconsciously ‘pick’ at the area and make it sore.  Any suggestions?
